Electric Double Layer Phenomena: A Review on Models and Problems

Electric double layer lies in the heart of modern day electrochemical energy storage devices like batteries, fuel cells, supercapacitors and water filtration membranes. The advent of nanostructured rough and porous electrodes has open new possibilities and new challenges. This review summarizes the theoretical development in the electric double layer theory on porous and rough electrodes. Both the electrolyte and electrode aspect of EDL are reviewed. The mathematical approaches are critically re-examined for the static and dynamic behavior of EDL formed. Especially, various models of porous and rough electrodes are reviewed. The purpose of this chapter is to explore all the various problems at present and to understand the EDL formed in nanostructured interfaces. This chapter introduces the basic concepts, lays the foundation and introduces the methodology employed in developing the theoretical models in EDL formed at nanostructured interfaces. We conclude the chapter with some open questions in EDL and provide brief outlines of the chapters in this thesis.
